Instead, he played in the Roses match at Headingley, where he took 5 for 97 in Lancashire’s first innings and then scored 157 not out, becoming the first Yorkshire player to score a century and take five wickets in consecutive matches. At the Oval, Graeme Swann picked up eight wickets and part-timer Marcus North four on a dry, dusty track – one that turned rather more than any English wicket Mr S K Warne had the pleasure of bowling on, funnily enough – and I believe Rashid may well have caused the Aussie batsmen a lot of trouble. However, England managed just fine without him, and credit must go the English selectors for sticking to their guns and refusing to panic.
